IS IT A BABY?

YOU DECIDE.

When does life begin? Is a fetus a baby? When does a fetus become a person?

New advances in ultrasound technology may help you answer these questions.

(You are listening to the heartbeat of a 15 week old fetus)

Ultrasound

High resolution 4-D ultrasound provides a real-time window to the womb. This amazing technology uses ultra-high frequency sound waves to form a moving image of the fetus.

The fetus's face, hands, and even hair can frequently be seen. Hiccupping, thumb sucking, yawning, and smiling have all been observed using 4-D ultrasound early in a fetus' development. The 4-D ultrasound shown above is of a 28 week old fetus.

What About DNA?

The human body has up to 60,000,000,000,000 (60 trillion) cells. Inside every cell is DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid. DNA is the blueprint that carries all the information necessary for making the body, and it is the same in every cell of the body. The DNA in any one cell of a human contains 3 billion base pairs.

Figure 1. Every cell in the human body contains DNA (U.S. Department of Energy graphic).

Figure 1 shows the DNA in the cells of the human body. DNA is different in every person, except for identical twins. Because it is unique, like a fingerprint, and because it is exactly the same in every cell of the body, it is frequently used by law enforcement to solve crimes. The DNA from a single strand of hair can link an individual to the scene of a crime.

The DNA of mother and the unborn daughter are always different.

The fetus' DNA will remain the same for the rest of its life; the same through birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. Like fingerprints, the DNA of mother and the unborn daughter are always different. And like a human fingerprint, the DNA in every fetus has never existed before in history and will never exist again.

Is it a Baby? You Decide.
